Frequently Asked Questions

Colt .22 M4 & M16

Why doesn't the dust cover function?
This is an intentional engineering design. By having the dust cover open and the bolt exposed with the empty chamber indicator (blue tab) inserted, it is easier to quickly determine if the rifle is unloaded. In addition, when the rifle is stored, it should be stored with the bolt closed and the empty chamber indicator in place, making it unnecessary for a dust cover since the chamber is protected from dust and debris by the indicator and the bolt.

Why is it that the forward assist does not work?
The forward assist is for esthetics only. It is there to maintain the true look of a Colt. Because Colt .22 M4 and M16s use only .22LR ammunition, if the assist were to work, it could cause a jammed cartridge to fire when struck.

Can the receivers be interchanged?
Colt .22 Rimfire Rifles are dedicated .22LR. The upper and lower cannot be swapped with non-Colt .22 rimfire rifles.

How much do the Colt .22 LR M4s and M16s cost?
Price is set by the dealer. The Colt M4 .22LR carbine MSRP is $575.99. The M16 .22LR MSRP is $599.99. Versions with tactical railing will cost more.

The magazine does not always seat properly.
Be sure to give the bottom of the magazine a good tap when you insert it. This ensures that the magazine seats firmly. Initially, the magazine fits tightly into the gun, but this will break in over time.

Why does the magazine not lock in properly?
Be sure to firmly seat the magazine every time it is inserted. If this does not help, contact Umarex USA's service department, because the magazine latch might need to be replaced.

Why is the rear pin so tight?
The tightness of the rear pin contributes to the Colt .22 Rimfire Rifle's accuracy. Be sure to loosen the compensator (flash suppressor) two (2) turns before removing the rear pin. This takes pressure off the pin and makes it easier to remove.

Why does the rear reciever pin keep creeping out?
The pin detent may be missing or not functioning properly. Contact Umarex USA.

On the M4 Ops and M16 SPR models, How do the rail covers come off?
Push down hard on the steel spring clip and slide the cover forward at the same time.

Why doesn't the external bolt catch work?
Colt .22 Rimfire rifles are engineered with an internal bolt lock. The external bolt-catch is to maintain the authentic look of the Colt.

Will standard AR grips work with the Colt .22 Rimfire Rifles?
Standard AR grip options will not work on these rifles as their internal hole(s) do not line up with the screw mount.

Can the recoil buffer tube be exchanged?
The buffer tube is not exchangeable, but you can replace the multi-position buttstock.

I've shot my Colt Rimfire Rifle and noticed some dark spots and shavings in the barrel?
The "spots" and "shavings" are build-up of lead due to numerous shots being fired through the rifle. Thoroughly clean the barrel to resolve this issue. Click here to watch a video on how to clean the Colt 22 M4 or M16 Rifle.
